Hex dump (first bytes)
How it works
- Detection uses the file's leading bytes (its magic number), which cannot be faked by renaming a file - a .jpg that is really a PNG is reported as a PNG.
- Known signatures include images, video, audio, archives, PDF, Office documents, fonts, executables and many text/markup formats.
- If nothing matches, the file is tested for being text and reported as plain text, CSV, JSON or XML based on its content.
- A short hex dump of the first bytes is shown so you can recognise unusual formats yourself.
